An Employer has a duty of controlling the way that their employees perform their duties to minimise the risk of injuries caused  by lifting.

Whilst it is almost impossible for an employer to prevent injury occurring they must be able to prove that every effort has been taken to minimise the prospect of injury occurring and put appropriate measures  in place by ensuring that proper training and equipment is provided.
